Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Elda obtained her nursing degree in 2017, then relocated to Williamson County in 2018. Shortly after, she began working as a Healthcare Coordinator at a memory care facility located in Austin.
In 2023, she was referred to our Homeownership program and after applying, she and her daughter, Elora, were selected as a future Habitat family for our Shepherd’s Village development.
When asked what her hopes were for her family and future Habitat home, she replied, “As a single mom, I’m really excited that my daughter will have her own room, and we’ll finally have a place we can call home. A safe, stable home means everything to us and I’m so grateful to Habitat for helping make that possible.”
Elda is currently working on obtaining her sweat equity hours through various volunteer opportunities and completing her Habitat homeowner education courses.
In regard to her volunteer experiences so far, she says, “I’ve learned so much through the volunteer work, sweat equity, and the classes Habitat offers. Before, I didn’t know much about how the homebuilding process worked, but now I feel a lot more knowledgeable. The staff and volunteers have been amazing—everyone is so kind and helpful. I really feel supported throughout this journey.”
Elda is looking forward to this next chapter in life for her and her daughter and has been sharing her story with Habitat with her friends and family.
“Habitat is helping me become a homeowner. Without them, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to have a place of my own. Habitat isn’t just about building houses; they’re building futures for families. It’s such an important organization because it gives people like me the chance to create a stable home and a better life.”
In her free time, Elda enjoys spending time with her daughter, cooking, reading, and finding new activities to do together.
On March 6th, the City of Georgetown finally approved Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County’s (HFHWC) building permit for the first two homes of its development project, Shepherd's Village.
"Best day in a long time," a Habitat key volunteer comments, "we are in the home building business again.”
In 2020, HFHWC utilized individual donations and grant funding to purchase a 1-acre lot between 21st and 22nd Streets in southeast Georgetown. Schematics for the 12-condo home development (named in honor of the Shepherd family, who contributed the largest portion of the purchase price of the land) were created and plans were submitted to the City of Georgetown shortly after. However, numerous setbacks resulted in delays with this project, causing HFHWC to halt its development.
However, plans were finally approved this month, allowing HFHWC to officially move forward with its first condo community and continue its mission of creating and sustaining affordable homeownership in Williamson County.
HFHWC will be commemorating the occasion with a groundbreaking ceremony on April 12th at 10am and invite our community of supporters to stop by the future build site of Shepherd’s Village to attend the event and celebrate with us.
Originally from Dallas, Texas Ashley relocated to Williamson County in 2014 with her now 18 year old son, Cameron. Ashley graduated from Texas A&M with a B.A. in Communications and currently works as a communications coordinator in Austin. She was recently selected as a Habitat Homeowner for one of the single-family homes that will be built on Leander Street.
“Affordable home options were just not affordable here in Williamson County, even though I had a decent paying job. Habitat allows individuals to have a strong start to building generational wealth and I'm grateful to have been selected for their Homeownership program. ”
Joining the Habitat Family
When asked what her hopes were for her family and future Habitat home, she replied, "Security and stability, having a
place to call home, where your kids feel safe and eventually grandkids have a place to visit."
To date, Ashley has been working on obtaining her sweat equity hours through various volunteer opportunities and completing her Habitat homeowner education courses.
Looking back at her volunteer experiences so far, she says, "I love that we aren't just put into a home, but set up to succeed through educational classes that help us to understand and be prepared for homeownership.”
Both Ashley and her son are excited to move into their home in the near future and becoming a part of the Habitat family.
“You're in an atmosphere with people who want to help you succeed. It's been such a wonderful experience and having the opportunity to truly invest in our home is a blessing."
In her free time, Ashley enjoys socializing with friends, listening to podcasts, volunteering, hiking, and watching movies with her son.
