Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Elda obtained her nursing degree in 2017, then relocated to Williamson County in 2018. Shortly after, she began working as a Healthcare Coordinator at a memory care facility located in Austin.
In 2023, she was referred to our Homeownership program and after applying, she and her daughter, Elora, were selected as a future Habitat family for our Shepherd’s Village development.
When asked what her hopes were for her family and future Habitat home, she replied, “As a single mom, I’m really excited that my daughter will have her own room, and we’ll finally have a place we can call home. A safe, stable home means everything to us and I’m so grateful to Habitat for helping make that possible.”
Elda is currently working on obtaining her sweat equity hours through various volunteer opportunities and completing her Habitat homeowner education courses.
In regard to her volunteer experiences so far, she says, “I’ve learned so much through the volunteer work, sweat equity, and the classes Habitat offers. Before, I didn’t know much about how the homebuilding process worked, but now I feel a lot more knowledgeable. The staff and volunteers have been amazing—everyone is so kind and helpful. I really feel supported throughout this journey.”
Elda is looking forward to this next chapter in life for her and her daughter and has been sharing her story with Habitat with her friends and family.
“Habitat is helping me become a homeowner. Without them, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to have a place of my own. Habitat isn’t just about building houses; they’re building futures for families. It’s such an important organization because it gives people like me the chance to create a stable home and a better life.”
In her free time, Elda enjoys spending time with her daughter, cooking, reading, and finding new activities to do together.
