Summer in Central Texas can be brutal, with temperatures well into the triple digits. And as we move into June, it’s a smart idea to make sure your home is ready for the hot weather season. Here are our top recommended things to do for prepping your home for summer!
Keep Things Cool
One of the most important things to check on first is your a/c unit. Experts recommend washing out your condenser (your outside unit) with your garden hose twice a year to remove any external debris and dirt. Additionally, they state you should have a tune-up conducted by a professional once a year to ensure the interior components are all working properly.
Prepping Your Home For Summer: Keep The Bugs Away
Another downside of summer: the bugs! Keep pests to a minimum by removing any piles of debris or leaves and checking your window screens for holes and tears. Additionally, try to prevent any bodies of stagnant water, which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Finally, do an inspection of the perimeter of your house for wasps/hornet nests, which can quick grow in size if left untreated.
Give The Exterior of Your Home Some TLC
You should clear out your gutters at least twice a year but most especially before summer, as any debris or leaves can block the flow of water to the downspouts. Additionally, debris in gutters can be perfect breeding grounds for pests. Also be sure to check both inside and outside your house for any cracks that need to be sealed.
Spruce Your Lawn and Landscape
While Spring is the best time to clear our garden beds and treat your lawn for weeds, you will still want to provide regular maintenance throughout summer. This can include post-emergent treatments, fertilizer (low in nitrogen so as not to burn), and pest treatments. If you have pets and/or children, try to select those products that safe for them as well. Finally, if you have an sprinkler system, be sure to test it to make sure it’s working properly.
