Facing the overwhelming challenge of finding a home and mortgage she could afford, Kelsey applied to the Habitat homeownership program last July. “I feel this was my only way to finally provide the security I want and need for my family. Apartments cost more than 50% of my income and to buy a home in other ways, my mortgage would be unbelievably high! My grandmother told me about Habitat for years and finally I decided to apply.”
Kelsey has been hard at work since qualifying into the Habitat homeownership program this past September. “I started my sweat equity hours right away! I have already completed my Financial Peace University classes and my pre-purchase homebuyer education. I have also been out and about building other Habitat homes alongside other future homeowners and Habitat volunteers.” This past November Kelsey joined future homeowner Shonta at the Panel Build event of her home and on site (Taylor, TX) during the home build.
Construction on Kelsey’s future home, located in Round Rock, is scheduled to begin in early May. Changes to the event date may be impacted by the current COVID-19 crisis, but the project is moving forward. Concrete contractors/suppliers and sponsors, Danze Concrete and Tex Mix are busy pouring the home’s foundation. “I can’t wait to have my boys in a “normal” home environment and it be permanent! My parents still own the home I grew up in and that is a huge part of why I wanted this for my boys. They deserve all that I grew up with and more. My grandparents also own their home and I have always dreamed of this happening for us. We look forward to having family over for dinner, for my boys to have play dates and sleepovers with their friends!”
