Volunteer Spotlight – Barb Mall

How long have you been a Habitat volunteer?
I started volunteering with Habitat in 2003 when my younger daughter graduated from high school and I was looking for a new opportunity for volunteering.  My husband Mike was already a Habitat volunteer and I thought it would be good to be involved in the same organization.  I started in the office, but after a while I started to go to the build sites too.  I like both!

How do you feel volunteering with us impacts your life?
It gives me a meaningful activity now that our children are grown. It is physically and mentally challenging at times, but that is a good feeling. It keeps me from becoming a couch-potato or shopping too much! leave smiley face

Why do you choose to support Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County, TX?
I have extended family that I wish this type of opportunity had been available to them.  I am sure their lives would have been different if it had.  I like the thought of giving a hand up to deserving people.

What is your most memorable Habitat moment?
Working with the entire Habitat staff & sharing the happiness of every homeowner and their families at their house dedication, and the completion of Old Mill Village.

What is your favorite activity in your volunteer role(s)?
Working alongside such a diverse group of volunteers and future homeowners.  I enjoy getting to know our regular volunteers and also the many people who come out to join us for just one day.  Seeing the excitement in the homeowners as we get closer to finishing their houses.

What does “home” mean to you?
Home is the center of family.  It doesn’t have to be a physical house, but a safe and steady environment.  It is hard for a parent to provide that environment if they have no control over their housing, neighborhood, or lack hope for a better life. At Habitat Williamson County we help provide that stability that is essential to the wellness and happiness of these struggling families.  Our contribution makes such a difference in their lives and their futures.  We may not be able to change the entire county, but we are ensuring that those that we work with have one less struggle in their lives.

Habitat provides a mechanism to not only change the lives of one family, but to enrich the lives of everyone that works together to achieve this goal.  It also enhances our neighborhoods, our cities, our county, our state, our country, and especially our world.
